A music photoshoot with country and western singer Michael Asma.
Musician: Michael Asma
Photographer: matt g
Location: Gold Coast Photography Studio
As one of the Gold Coast's leading music photographers, I get a lot of bands and musicians in the studio, and it's always a fun shoot. For this shoot, country and western singer Michael Asma popped into the studio for an afternoon. These images were for promotional use, rather than music artwork, and are fairly simple in style, although inevitably I couldn't help but get a bit silly and do a few "live" shots, despite the fact we were in the studio and not on stage! Live shots are so much easier in the studio than when the musician is actually playing so I always add a couple to any music shoot.
When a band or musician chooses a music photographer, it's important that both the photographer and the musician know each other's style - there's no point in me shooting a low-key gritty photograph if the musician sings pop love songs! Fortunately, Michael liked the look of my photographs and I think it suits the country and western style, so we were both happy to shoot and to see how things developed. As almost always happens during a music photoshoot, I start safe, then get more dramatic, then eventually get a bit silly towards the end. There's usually an artistic sweetspot around two-thirds of the way through and most of the shots in this gallery are from that sweetspot.
Michael is a seasoned performer, so the shoot was very easy and I'm very pleased with how the images came out - although cowboy hats really get in the way of the lighting!
For those of you that are interested by the techical details, these photographs were taken on a Nikon D800 camera and using Elinchrom lighting. Most of the shots used just one or two BRX strobes with a small reflector attached. The reflector produces a harsh light, but for a country and western singer, a soft-focus portrait probably wouldn't be appropriate! The background was a grey vinyl backdrop that I deliberately let some light spill onto.
